Elexon is the company set up to negotiate electricity prices and policy in the United Kingdom. They moved to new offices and wanted to have a number of audio-visual facilities at their disposal.
We designed and installed all audio-visual systems for the project. The client's brief highlighted the absolute need for user-friendly control of the systems. As they would be used by non-technical office staff, the systems had to be simple to operate.
The most important area was a 100 seat briefing theatre. This has complete integrated touch screen control of all sound, lighting and audio-visual services.
All displays are plasma, including one 61" plasma screen. We installed a number of laptop plug and play points around the room and these were integrated into the furniture. The furniture itself is a modular system, designed to be fitted together to cope with multiple room layouts. Our system design had to deal with all these different room layouts and change its settings accordingly.
The main delegates use a wireless conference microphone system to communicate with each other. The 24 station system is wireless with each station having a microphone and loudspeaker. The chairman has overall control and muting facilities. This system is integrated, allowing the client to have room audio preset to numerous configurations for complete flexibility and better sound. For additional ease of use, the microphone systems are charged in one wheeled case, allowing the system to be fully charged for 8 hours continuous use.
All equipment control is done using a central control system. This has wireless touch screen to control what is viewed on the plasma screens, all audio controls, lighting and control of DVD players, visualisers satellite, TV and video conferencing feeds.
We used digital signal processors to give a fine degree of control of the sound balance and allow automatic mixing of up to twenty microphones. We installed a number of zoned ceiling loudspeakers and screen loudspeakers.
This room can be divided and the system is designed to split into two and operate as two independent systems at the touch of a button.
Also in the main conference room is a video conferencing system connected via ISDN lines. We also installed infrastructure to five other rooms and a portable video system with plasma screen to allow other rooms to have presentations in them. These can either be self-contained meetings or take a relay from the main conference room.
A great deal of time was spent working with the architect and designers to make the equipment fit in to the look of the room. We added details such as putting wall mounted plasma screens on rotating pivots that allow them to be recessed into the wall when they are not in use.
The whole project is an extremely high tech installation using some of the latest technology to provide Elexon with sophisticated, but easy-to-use audio-visual facilities.
