AUDIO AT SEA: THE PRIDE OF BILBAO
|
Live Business International (LBI) has provided P&O Ferries with a new, dual purpose audio system for its cruise ship Pride of Bilbao. The ship's theatre is used to stage a live show in the evening, and is then turned into a disco at night.
The layout of the room and the dual role of the sound system made this a complex and interesting project. The room and its use makes the sound design exceptionally complicated for a number of reasons. A very low ceiling height makes even coverage tough to achieve; the fact that the audience is seated at 180 degrees all around the stage requires us to provide extremely wide dispersion, and the room itself is an odd shape, again making sound coverage difficult. LBI was also asked to minimise the amount of noise spill into neighbouring cabins. Encompassing all these factors into the design was a considerable challenge.
Our solution was to install a single system of loudspeakers which could be switched between 'stage band' and 'disco' setups, using the latest in automation technology, at the flick of a switch. This would also leave the sound system operator free to concentrate on the performers. Careful placement of the main loudspeakers and shock-mounted sub-bass speakers reduce noise and vibration transmission beyond the room.
Each setting is dedicated to getting best performance out of the system for that particular mode, and the system's extensive automation means that operators do not feel the need to alter the settings. LBI was also able to make the existing system sound much clearer by removing unnecessary components.
We are delighted that our work has been rewarded with additional contracts for P&O.
